WITH a focus on becoming the world’s leader in marine animal experiences, Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai, UAE, is now offering its guests the chance to go on a ‘Shark Safari’ at the Shark Lagoon at Aquaventure.
Previously, underwater adventures were only for certified scuba divers, but the Shark Safari helmet allows non-certified people to become marine explorers, and even walk underwater for a fish eye perspective on the world.
Shark Safari utilises the Sea Trek underwater system which has been engineered for comfort, safety and reliability. The system requires little training; just a small information session and anyone between the ages of eight and 80 can participate in a Shark Safari journey, regardless of swimming skill or physical ability. During the 20 minute safari, participants will get up close and personal with the many Black Tip Reef Sharks, rare Marble Rays and exotic and colourful fish that call the Atlantis Shark Lagoon home, making this experience a memorable underwater tale with which to thrill their families. The cost is Dh275 ($75) per person.
The resort also offers other thrilling adventure experiences including the Cownose Ray Feeding at the Mesopotamian-styled Ziggurat is the definitive feeding experience. Guests join an Aquarist in the shallow waters of the Shark Lagoon for a 35-minute hands-on experience. The Ray Feeding can be enjoyed for Dh175 ($47) for resort guests and for day visitors. Certified divers can go scuba diving with sharks conducted in the Shark Lagoon, which is home to a variety of different marine species including many sharks and rays. The Shark Dive course also aims to educate divers about sharks, their habits and how to preserve them. Programmes run daily with Padi diving professionals at the Dive Centre. The cost is Dh1,600 ($435) which includes two dives.
There is also the Ultimate Dive in the amazing 11 million litre Ambassador Lagoon. This once in a lifetime experience includes two 30 minute dives in the depths of the lagoon, enjoying and exploring the ancient ruins and species of the Arabian Gulf and the thrill of feeding the rays by hand. Refreshments and full Arabic Mezze is included in the Dh2,500 ($680) dive package.
