SHANGRI-LA Hotels and Resorts will open more than 20 new hotels in the next two years across eight countries. Five of these properties will open new markets for the group, including: Turkey, Mongolia, the UK, Sri Lanka, and Qatar.
The first of the openings will be the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto which is expected to open doors in August 2012. The 202-room luxury hotel will be the group’s second hotel in Canada. Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto will occupy 17 floors of a new 68-storey tower on University Avenue at Adelaide Street, the 10th tallest building in Toronto. Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai will open mid-2012 and the 410-room hotel will be Shangri-La’s second property in India. Jing An Shangri-La, Shanghai, the group’s third hotel in Shanghai and first hotel on the West side of the city, will open first Q 2013.
The 508-guestroom hotel occupies the top 28 floors of a 59-storey building and restaurants are being designed by Hong Kong-based Andre Fu, Tokyo-based Super Potato, and New York-based AvroKo.
Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu is expected to open late 2012 in the Shandong Province two hours north of Shanghai. The 501-room hotel’s architecture and interiors will reflect the heritage of the city. Set on the banks of a tributary to the Si river, the hotel will have outdoor garden pavilions and meeting rooms designed as a study centre. Shangri-La Sanya, Hainan Island will open first quarter of 2013 on the five mile Haitang Bay beach. The property will be Shangri-La’s first beach resort in China and will offer 503 guest rooms and 43 villas, in addition to landscaped gardens, multiple pools including a saltwater lagoon, recreation facilities for all ages, and Shangri-La’s signature spa concept CHI.
In the Middle East, the Shangri-La Hotel, Doha will open late 2012. The hotel will be Shangri-La’s sixth hotel in the Middle East, and will be in the commercial heart of Doha.
Shangri-La Hotel, At the Shard, London will open in the first quarter of 2013 and will be the first hotel in the United Kingdom for Shangri-La. Designed by internationally acclaimed architect, Renzo Piano, the 203-room hotel is on the South Bank of River Thames between St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London.
The 188-room Shangri-La Hotel, Istanbul, the group’s first hotel in Turkey, will open beginning of 2013 and is located between the Dolmabahce Palace and the Maritime Museum on the European coast of the Bosphorus Straits.
Shangri-La Hotel, Lhasa will open in 2013 on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, the highest region on earth. The 284-room urban resort will rest amongst the tallest peaks in the world: a striking mountain landscape of glaciers, valleys and lakes.
Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar is will open in the capital of Mongolia in 2013, initially with 273 rooms. When completed, the hotel will feature 408 rooms and 73 serviced apartments. Shangri-La’s first in Mongolia, will be part of an office, retail and hotel complex located on the east side of the Sukhe-Bahor Square in the centre of Ulaanbaatar city.
Shangri-La is also planning two developments in Sri Lanka. The group will initially open a beachside resort on the southern Hambantota coast in 2013 with 161 rooms and 20 villas. The following year a multi-use complex with shopping, residences and a 700-room luxury hotel within Colombo will open.
