Sri Lanka is targeting 3 million international tourist arrivals over the next 12 months as the country steps up efforts to strengthen its presence in the UAE, wider GCC and other key international markets.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) is promoting the destination under its brand promise, “Sri Lanka: You’ll Come Back for More,” highlighting the island’s combination of beaches, cultural heritage, wildlife, wellness and outdoor experiences.

Its compact geography allows visitors to experience multiple attractions within a single trip, positioning the country as a year-round destination for a range of traveller segments.

Strong air connectivity with the Middle East is expected to support the growth strategy. There are currently eight daily direct flights between the UAE and Sri Lanka, while the wider GCC region is connected to the island by a further eight daily services.

Tourism officials say the connectivity provides convenient travel options for families, leisure visitors, luxury travellers and business passengers.

Sri Lankan officials also highlighted growing bilateral relations with the UAE and the importance of tourism in strengthening economic and commercial ties.

The country is working with travel agents, tour operators and media across the Gulf to promote its tourism offering and develop tailored experiences for regional visitors.

The tourism strategy focuses on diversifying Sri Lanka’s appeal and attracting higher-value and niche segments.

Wellness tourism is a key priority, with the country expanding its portfolio of Ayurvedic retreats, yoga centres and holistic wellness properties.

Sri Lanka was also recently recognised by BookRetreats as its No. 1 Trending Wellness Destination for 2026.

The country is also developing its position as a destination for weddings and celebrations, leveraging its tropical landscapes, heritage properties and beachfront venues.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is expanding its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) infrastructure, combining upgraded facilities with leisure experiences for corporate groups.

Cruise tourism is another area of focus, with port facilities and shore excursions being developed in Colombo, Galle and Trincomalee to accommodate growing international cruise traffic in the Indian Ocean.

The luxury accommodation sector is also expanding, with eight new five-star resorts and boutique luxury properties adding capacity and offering international-standard facilities alongside Sri Lankan hospitality.

Tourism officials say these developments, combined with improved connectivity and stronger regional partnerships, will help broaden Sri Lanka’s visitor base and support its goal of reaching 3 million international arrivals over the coming year. -TTN
