PROJECT DETAILS

Bids for the architectural consultancy contract of the Jeddah Metro project are currently under evaluation and are expected to be awarded in December.

Prequalification for the Obhur bridge has also begun. Meanwhile, Foster and Partners was selected to design 46 stations in October 2014.

The project is being developed by Metro Jeddah Company on behalf of the Saudi Ministry of Transport.

The project will target to cater to 30 per cent of the city’s traffic in 20 years. At present, public transportation accounts for only 1 to 2 per cent of commuters in Jeddah.

The network of Jeddah Metro will be 108 km long with three lines: Orange line, Blue line and Green line.  The Orange line will be 67 km long and will connect Makkah Road with Obhur and a branch line will run along Sari Street. The Orange line will include 22 stations.

The Blue line will connect King Abdulaziz International airport to the Old Airport Road. This line will be 27 km long and will include 17 stations. The Green line will include seven stations and will run along Palestine Road for 17 km. The Obhur bridge will have eight lanes for road traffic, a single railway line and two pavements.

Apart from the Metro network, this project will also include a commuter train network and a tram network spanning 151 km, marine networks, ferries, and commuter, rapid and feeder buses.

The tram network will be 48 km long with 48 stations, while the commuter rail network will be 93 km long with 13 stations. The marine network will be 94 km long with 17 stations, while the bus network will span 840 km in one direction, with 2,950 bus stations and 816 buses.

With the number of pilgrims visiting Saudi Arabia for Haj and Umrah increasing by thousands each year, the holy land for Muslims is in urgent need of a successful and unproblematic transport infrastructure and basically to provide easy and fast public transport system to locals.

The Government of Saudi Arabia expects this system to be environmentally friendly because people will be encouraged to leave their cars behind and travel in public transport. It is the biggest project at present in Jeddah and it will have socio-economic effects on all parts of the province. The construction and planning process will provide a lot of employment opportunities for the local people.

Egis Rail is the conceptual design consultant. AECOM Arabia Company Limited is the pre-project management consultant and Systra is the preliminary engineering consultant.
