PROJECT DETAILS

The Omani Ministry of Heritage and Culture is likely to award the construction contracts for its ambitious cultural complex in Muscat, Oman, in the first quarter of 2015. The bids were submitted in November.

The project which will be the first-of-its-kind in the Middle East, will spread over a 62,000 sq m land area with a 40,000 sq m built up area and will consist of a cultural centre with a 1,000-seat national theatre, national archives, a library, cultural labs, a cinema, restaurants and administration offices under a vast musharabieh canopy.

The Ministry of Heritage and Culture wants the complex to be a national centre that promotes cultural and artistic innovations.

The National Library will contain 5 million volumes of books, while the National Archives will act as a four-storey exhibition, public event area and a research and administration wing. The cultural arena of the sultanate will contain different elements that serve the country’s citizens, intellectuals and researchers in scientific and practical fields.

Around the complex there will be an “Oasis Fruit Garden”. This will accommodate 1,100 palm trees, 750 fruit trees and 32,500 smaller trees and shrubs.

The centre aims to be a hub that will link local and international knowledge and cultural industries to help develop Oman’s cultural scene.

The main architect consultant for the project is Architecture Studio, while Gulf Engineering Consultants is the co-architect. Mace International is the project management consultant and French group Setec Batiment the engineering consultant.
