Nestled just across the causeway from bustling Singapore, Johor Bahru (JB) is the vibrant capital of the southern Malaysian state of Johor, with a rich history and an ever-evolving charm. As a gateway between Malaysia and Singapore, JB is a place where cultures converge and history meets modernity.
The name 'Johor' is believed to have been derived from the Arabic word Jauhar, meaning 'jewel' – a fitting description for a place that shines with both historical significance and contemporary allure.
From luxurious malls filled with prestigious global brands to the colourful street markets offering local delicacies, Johor Bahru is a city of contrasts, constantly evolving yet deeply rooted in its heritage.
Founded as Tanjung Puteri in the 1800s, the city quickly grew into a port town that attracted traders and settlers from all over. Today, JB stands as a modern urban centre with bustling business districts, yet remnants of its past still remain.
From its iconic waterfront to its vibrant markets, this city is constantly in motion. One of the most striking aspects of JB is its incredible cultural diversity. It is a true melting pot – where Malay, Chinese, Indian, and various other communities coexist harmoniously.
This rich mix of traditions is evident in every corner, from the tantalising variety of foods served at bustling street markets to the intricate designs of its temples and mosques. Festivals, both religious and secular, are celebrated with fervour, adding to the city's vibrant atmosphere.
TTN was right in the thick of it, experiencing all the excitement as a guest of Malaysia Tourism at the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2025.
"It is a tapestry of cultures, a vibrant melting pot of different traditions, each contributing to the rich heritage that defines our identity. Our local cuisine is a reflection of this diversity, and I invite you to savour signature dishes like Laksa Johor, Mee Bandung Muar, and Asam Pedas," said YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the Chief Minister of Johor, during his media briefing.
With six national parks, pristine sandy beaches, and the enchanting islands of Mersing, Johor Bahru is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. For those in the know, it is a hidden gem promising a memorable experience off the beaten path, said the official.
"Whether it's the historic Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque or the colonial buildings lining the streets, JB is a testament to the city’s journey from port to metropolis," he added.
Our exploration began with a visit to the Royal Abu Bakar Museum, one of the state’s most significant landmarks. Built in 1866, it was formerly the Grand Palace of the Johor Sultan and has been a museum since 1982.
Surrounded by a sprawling 53-hectare garden, the Grand Palace (also known as Istana Besar) is a symbol of grandeur, offering a glimpse into the regal life of the Sultan of Johor. The museum is filled with rare artefacts of the Royal Family.
It beautifully chronicles Johor’s journey, offering a glimpse into the region's history. The architecture itself is a masterpiece, with the building’s unique blend of European architectural grandeur and traditional Malay design details.
The next stop was Johor Darul Ta’zim’s world-class Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, home to the local JDT football team. After a behind-the-scenes tour of the top sports facility, we received VIP treatment – hopping into a Hummer limousine and cruising around the stadium.
The next day was a hectic one, beginning with a tour of the enchanting Legoland Malaysia theme park – a perfect destination for a family day out featuring over 40 interactive rides, shows, and attractions. With each area offering something distinct, Legoland Malaysia is designed to ignite the imagination of all ages.
What better way to end this action-packed tour than going on a shopping spree at Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) in Iskandar Puteri, where everyone indulged in snapping up designer deals at discounted prices.
Johor Bahru is a place where every visit offers something new to discover. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or an adventure lover, this city has it all – an ever-evolving gem that constantly reshapes itself while honouring its rich past.
