AROYA on its maiden journey on Red Sea

By Zainab Altaitoon

Saudi Arabia is redefining luxury travel in the region, with the launch of Aroya Cruises marking a key milestone in this journey. In December, Aroya Cruises’ inaugural ship, AROYA, began welcoming guests for enchanting voyages across the Red Sea.
TTN had the privilege of joining AROYA’s maiden voyage from Jeddah Islamic Port into the serene waters of the Red Sea. During this journey, we engaged with industry experts on the ship to explore AROYA’s potential impact on the cruise industry and its significance for the future of Middle Eastern tourism.
Here are insights from Lakshmi Durai, CEO of CruiseXplore; Hasan Murad, Cruise Travel Advisor at Cruise Planner BH; and Mohamed Assem, Tours Manager at Al Madar Travel and Tourism in Kuwait:
What makes AROYA a standout in the cruise industry?
Durai: AROYA represents an innovative concept as the first cruise line in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. This is significant not just for the region but for the entire cruise industry. The ship itself is a beautiful fusion of modern amenities and traditional Arabic elegance. Every aspect, from the design to the onboard services, reflects this balance. The Ithar restaurant, for instance, serves authentic Arabic cuisine, featuring dishes from various regions of Saudi Arabia. It’s truly an outstanding culinary experience.
Murad: AROYA embodies the essence of Arab culture and the Gulf region, which is something we can all take pride in. The ship’s facilities are designed to appeal to families, with child-friendly amenities and the luxurious offerings available even in the smallest cabins. One of the standout features is the shisha café, which is a first for any cruise worldwide. This unique offering adds a vibrant atmosphere and has already garnered a dedicated following among guests.

Who do you see as the primary target markets for AROYA in its initial years?
Durai: Given its local flavour, the primary market will likely be Saudis and other Middle Eastern travellers. However, AROYA will also offer summer itineraries departing from Istanbul, which will appeal to international guests.

What are your thoughts on the luxury cabins available on AROYA?
Durai: They are stunning! The Royal Villa, which features six bedrooms, is perfect for large Arab families. Family travel is a significant aspect of Arab culture, and this villa caters to that beautifully. My personal favorite is the Presidential Villa, which offers a cozy yet luxurious experience with a private open terrace, jacuzzi, sauna, and treatment room.
Assem: The Royal Villa is truly impressive! It’s designed for high-end clients and includes amenities like a massage room and a playroom for kids. The attention to detail, from the quality of materials to the textures used throughout the vessel, is exceptional.

Would you recommend AROYA to non-Muslims or Western expatriates?
Durai: Absolutely! The product is beautifully crafted to blend tradition with modernity. The decor, cuisine, and entertainment options allow international guests to experience local culture without compromising their expectations. Travellers are often eager to immerse themselves in new cultures, and AROYA offers a perfect opportunity for that.
Murad: December is particularly attractive for Western travellers, especially given the pleasant weather in the Red Sea. Many will likely visit diving centres in places like Aqaba and Sharm El Sheikh, making Aroya an appealing option.
Assem: The winter weather here is a stark contrast to the cold temperatures in Europe, making it an inviting destination for European travellers seeking warmth and experiences.

Do you see AROYA catering primarily to families and vacationers, or could it also serve as a venue for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events?
Durai: While AROYA is initially focused on holiday experiences, the potential for MICE events is significant. The ship is equipped with meeting rooms, and since everything is taken care of – accommodations, meals, entertainment – it provides a seamless experience for business travellers.
