Sharjah’s Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) concluded its participation in the 43rd World Travel Market in London, promoting the emirate’s growing appeal to thousands of industry professionals, particularly those from Europe, a key market for Sharjah.
In 2024, Sharjah welcomed 15,799 visitors from the UK between January and September. The UK now accounts for 23 per cent of Sharjah’s tourism, making it the leading European source, followed by Germany at 13 per cent. There has been a 23 per cent year-on-year growth in UK travellers to Sharjah during the first three quarters of 2024.
Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, spoke to TTN at WTM: “We are rapidly developing new segments, while enhancing our existing offerings. We will focus on luxury, niche, experiential, eco, and adventure tourism to attract new audiences in 2025.”
LAP OF LUXE
Sharjah has a lineup of luxury properties opening in the coming months. The LUX* Al Jabal Resort is an eco-friendly resort that will offer luxurious accommodations and a range of leisure activities along the Gulf of Oman, while LUX*Al Bridi Resort* will offer luxurious tented retreats and a range of activities, blending luxury with nature. Both are pencilled to open in 2025. Meanwhile, Anantara Sharjah Resort, opening in 2027, will offer well-appointed beachfront accommodations, a spa, multiple dining options, and a kids’ club. Located on Al Heerah Beach, it’s going to be a perfect blend of modern luxury and cultural heritage.
Al Midfa added: “Sharjah has a diverse range of genuine experiences. For example, the rich historical and archaeological experiences of Mleiha National Park which is a treasure house of fossils – and a go-to destination for fans of natural history.” There’s also the Buhais Geological Park’s five interconnecting pods featuring interactive displays, local fossils, viewing trails, and an immersive theatre, offering a unique insight into Sharjah’s storied past and a well-rounded family experience.
“Sharjah Safari, the largest safari experience outside of Africa, is another stunning experience where fans of wildlife can view endangered species. We will keep growing our portfolio of diverse and unique experiences like these, as well as train more and more specialised and licensed tour guides to enhance visitor experience,” said Al Midfa.
NATURE FOCUS
Rated highly by wildlife enthusiasts, Al Hefaiyah Conservation Centre spans 12 sq km, housing 30 native species and featuring indoor exhibits and larger animal enclosures. The space is designed for families to engage and learn more about native as well as endangered species. A habitat to more than 200 species of birds, Wasit Nature Reserve, is a transformed wetland in Sharjah, and is popular for trekking and birdwatching.
Among its historical properties that continue to draw visitors on a discovery trail are Khor Kalba Fort, built around 1745 and with displays of ancient artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Meanwhile, Al Dhaid Fort, with origins around 1820, preserves artifacts from Sharjah’s past. Al Midfa emphasised, “50 per cent of all the museums of UAE are in Sharjah, the emirate is well-known for its thriving art, culture and heritage scene.”
Sharjah’s deep dive into eco-tourism is not new. Those in the know are familiar with the exceptional offerings under the umbrella of the Sharjah Collection – a series of retreats that offer visitors an opportunity to stay in protected areas and heritage sites recognised by the UN. Each property is designed to immerse guests in the authentic natural beauty and local culture of the emirate.
Nestled in the Kalba mountains, the Nomad Project offers eco-friendly trailers for an adventure tourism experience rooted in ecological responsibility. The boutique Al Faya Retreat, crafted from 1960s stone buildings, showcases Sharjah’s talent for transforming historical structures into modern, green accommodations. Among Sharjah’s standout initiatives is the Mysk Moon Retreat—a lunar-domed glamping site providing a unique desert experience with minimal environmental impact, blending futuristic design with traditional Bedouin hospitality, all under strict ecological principles.
Al Midfa signed off: “There is plenty to explore in Sharjah as it offers a diverse portfolio of sports tourism experiences featuring hiking, cycling, kayaking, snorkelling, diving, fishing, and camel races, designed to appeal to adventure and outdoor enthusiasts.”
