EDITION has made its African debut with the opening of The Cape Town EDITION at Quay 7 on Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, introducing a luxury hospitality destination that combines contemporary design, locally inspired dining and African art with views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean and the historic harbour.
Positioned overlooking the Waterfront’s new superyacht
marina, the 142-room hotel connects Cape Town’s maritime heritage with its
contemporary cultural and culinary scene. Its location provides access to
museums, galleries, restaurants and retail attractions within one of the city’s
leading tourism districts.
Designed by Neri&Hu in collaboration with Cape
Town-based architects and professional firms, the hotel draws inspiration from
the industrial character of the working harbour. More than six million bricks
were laid by hand to create a textured façade reflecting the site’s
architectural heritage.
At the centre of the property is The Drum, a cylindrical,
open-air space featuring a spiral staircase leading to an outdoor viewing
platform overlooking the harbour, Table Mountain and the Atlantic coastline.
Guest accommodation includes bespoke furnishings, natural finishes and locally
crafted elements, while the Penthouse and Harbour Suite offer expansive living
spaces and panoramic views.
African creativity features prominently throughout the
interiors, with artworks by established and emerging artists curated by Cape
Town’s Southern Guild. Locally and regionally sourced objects, including Zulu
vessels and recycled glass from Eswatini, further connect the property to the
continent’s creative landscape.
The hotel’s culinary programme is led by Executive Chef Phil
Carmichael and South African beverage partner George Hunter. Signature
restaurant Shale showcases seasonal ingredients sourced from regional farmers,
coastal fisheries, winemakers and independent producers. Rooftop venue EAVE
combines dining, cocktails and music programming beside a heated pool, while
the Lobby Bar and Punch Room offer distinct social spaces inspired by Cape
Town’s contemporary lifestyle and historic trade routes.
Wellness facilities include a spa with five treatment rooms,
a couples’ suite, sauna and steam room, alongside a 24-hour gym and daily yoga,
breathwork and movement sessions. The property also features flexible event
facilities, including a ballroom accommodating up to 200 guests, meeting
studios and rooftop venues.
George Fleck, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader
of EDITION, said Cape Town’s landscapes, cultural influences and culinary scene
made it a natural destination for the brand.
V&A Waterfront CEO Graham Wood described the opening as
a milestone in the district’s development and a sign of confidence in Cape
Town’s international tourism and investment appeal.
General Manager Leonie Andereya said the hotel aims to serve
both residents and international visitors, creating a gathering place centred
on food, culture, creativity and conversation.
The opening expands EDITION’s international portfolio, bringing its design-led luxury hospitality concept to Africa for the first time. -TTN
