A hiker on Saudi Arabia's mountains

Aseer, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has hosted the Highlander Adventure, a global hiking event series that launched in 2017, during its first-ever trip to the kingdom.

Highlander hiking events are carefully selected to be in the most iconic locations with the goal of making multi-day hiking accessible, simple and fun for everyone.

During the ‘Discover Aseer’ series, Highlander traversed the breathtaking mountains of the Aseer region, including a dramatic visit to Al Habala, where sandstone homes cling to a cliff 400 metres above the ground. The group camped on the edge of a stunning canyon, soaking in panoramic views of the rugged Al Habala mountains.

Saudi Arabia’s highest peak
This unforgettable hiking experience was made possible by the Aseer Development Authority (ASDA), the Saudi Tourism Authority (STA), and the Saudi Sports for All Federation. Together, they led the adventurers to Rijal Almaa, a heritage village renowned for its unique architecture. The journey culminated in a challenging 7-kilometre ascent to Jabal Soudah, Saudi Arabia’s highest peak at 3,015 metres above sea level.

The journey pressed on to Al Yanfa, a timeless village steeped in 900 years of history, where ancient buildings, majestic mosques, and formidable structures stand proudly, gazing over the breathtaking landscapes of Aseer. Each edifice, with its weathered stones and intricate design, its silent presence stands as a testament to the region's profound and enduring heritage.

With over 40 events across 20 countries, Highlander’s choice of Aseer as its inaugural Saudi Arabian destination, underscores the region’s untapped potential as a haven for global adventurers. Aseer, rich in cultural heritage, stunning traditional architecture, and unique regional cuisine, is on track to attract 8 million tourists by year-end, with 3.2 million having visited during the summer alone.

Hatim Al Harbi, Chief of Tourism Destinations at the Aseer Region Destination Marketing & Management Office (DMMO), stated: "Our partnership with Highlander in Aseer signals the start of an extraordinary journey in Saudi Arabia. We are proud to be the first destination to host Highlander’s excursions in the Kingdom, offering travelers from around the globe unparalleled adventures. From conquering mountain peaks to exploring awe-inspiring trails, Aseer invites you to experience the thrill of nature like never before."

Natural beauty
Jurica Barac, CEO of Highlander, said: “We are committed to showcasing Saudi Arabia's natural beauty to the world, establishing it as a serious outdoor destination. With top-tier hospitality, we aim to work alongside local partners to develop Saudi Arabia into a global hiking hotspot. Our vision is not only to highlight the country’s breathtaking landscapes but also to create a destination that attracts outdoor enthusiasts from around the world, combining the best of nature with exceptional service."
In this spirit, Highlander Adventure will soon unveil its 2025 calendar of events and expeditions to Aseer. These immersive hikes will offer participants authentic encounters with Aseeri culture, while bolstering Saudi Arabia’s growing hiking community.

ASDA has set bold, sustainable tourism goals for the region. By 2030, the sector will inject SR26 billion ($6.9 billion) into the local GDP and generate 94,800 new jobs. ‘Discover Aseer’ plays a pivotal role in driving Saudi Arabia's push to attract both international and regional tourists, propelling the region to the forefront of the global tourism landscape.
