Al Noor Island in Sharjah is emerging as a distinctive cultural destination that blends art, architecture, nature and design into a public experience.
Located in the middle
of Khalid Lagoon and developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development
Authority (Shurooq), the island offers visitors an immersive environment where
creativity extends beyond traditional museums and galleries.
The island features a
collection of site-specific artworks integrated into its natural landscape.
Highlights include Torus by British artist David Harber, whose mirrored surface
reflects the surrounding lagoon and greenery; Flutter by Chris Wood, inspired
by migrating butterflies; OVO, an immersive light installation; and The Columns
by Austrian artist Susanne Schmögner, which adds vibrant colour to the island’s
pathways.
A key cultural
landmark is The Swing by Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi, inspired by the UAE’s
pearl-diving heritage and honouring the women who waited on the shores for
returning divers, creating a strong connection between contemporary art and
local history.
The island’s Butterfly
House further enhances the visitor experience with its nature-inspired
architecture and habitat for hundreds of butterflies, combining environmental
education with design.
Together, these
attractions create a tranquil cultural space where art, landscape and
architecture coexist, reflecting Sharjah’s vision of making culture an integral
part of everyday public life while offering visitors a destination for
