Explora Journeys, the luxury lifestyle ocean travel brand of the MSC Group, has unveiled its second ship, EXPLORA II, an exquisite vessel exemplifying modern European luxury hospitality, sustainable practices, and innovation.

The naming ceremony, which took place in Civitavecchia, Italy, attracted distinguished guests from around the world, including government officials, industry leaders and international media. The event featured a gala dinner, a musical performance by Tony Hadley, and a captivating drone show showcasing the Explora Journeys brand.

Rosalba Giugni, founder of the Marevivo Foundation, was chosen as godmother for her 35-year commitment to marine conservation. The MSC Foundation and Marevivo share a vision of protecting marine life and biodiversity.

CRUISING REDEFINED

In an exclusive interview, a senior executive at Explora Journeys provides insights into the company’s key differentiators and plans to reconnect with the Middle East market.

“Explora Journeys was born out of MSC Group’s vision to redefine the luxury ocean travel experience, making it more sophisticated and immersive for guests,” Achille Staiano, Chief Commercial Officer, Explora Journeys, tells TTN.

“Explora Journeys is modelled after the personal passion for immersive travel of the founders’ family  and extensive feedback from over 20,000 potential guests and is inspired by yachts with their luxurious space, choice, design and distinct bent towards slow travel.”

Moving away from the traditional theme park-like approach of some its cruising brethren, Explora Journeys focuses on sophistication, elegance, tranquillity and a deep connection with the ocean.

“Our heritage, our culture, comes from a different point of view,” explains Staiano, who has worked with the MSC Group for decades, having started at just 19 years old. “We design our ships with a specific concept in mind - redefining luxury while offering a richness of experiences for our guests.”

The emphasis on space, personalization, and the brand’s trademark “Ocean State Of Mind” is expected to resonate with the Middle East market, which the executive believes is ready for a more refined and immersive cruise offering.

Despite being forced to cancel its 2025 Middle East programme due to geopolitical factors, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to the region. “We believe in the area. We’ve been in the Middle East for a long time as MSC Cruises, and with Explora Journeys, we have the intention of offering such an exotic destination to all our guests,” Staiano tells us. “Hopefully, we will be able to return.

“We are looking at our planning for the future years, and by adding more ships, we will have the opportunity to expand our ideas and offerings.”

EXPLORA II was delivered to become the second ship to join the luxury travel brand of the MSC Group’s €3.5 billion fleet of six vessels, expected to set sail by 2028.

The liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered EXPLORA III will enter service in 2026, and EXPLORA IV, which will also be fuelled by LNG, will be completed in early 2027. EXPLORA V will join the luxury fleet in 2027 and EXPLORA VI in 2028.

KEY DIFFERENTIATOR

One of the key differentiators of the Explora Journeys brand is MSC Group’s extensive global distribution network, which is unmatched in the industry, Staiano tells TTN. “We have distribution in 75 countries. We have offices in 55 countries. This power allows us to develop a brand that is spread out in different parts of the world, catering to diverse nationalities and partners.”

This widespread presence enables the company to offer a truly global experience, with the Mediterranean culture serving as a unifying thread, says Staiano.

Explora Journeys believes that connecting with different cultures can broaden people’s perspectives and foster personal growth.

“Everyone will find a piece of their own culture, whether it’s through food, amenities, environment, or quality and elegance,” he says. “By connecting with cultures, it’s what allows people to open up, to expand, to improve.”

This extensive reach also allows the company to cater to diverse nationalities and offer a more personalized travel experience, he adds.

Staiano explains that Explora Journeys is channel agnostic. Though they do have direct bookings, the focus is the same on online channels and traditional travel advisor with a strong emphasis on building and maintaining relationships. Explora Journeys believes in maintaining connections with its partners and staying grounded in its roots. This approach has contributed to the company’s growth and success, explains Staiano.

EXPLORA II

EXPLORA II is a masterpiece of design, combining modern aesthetics with a deep respect for the ocean. The ship’s interiors are adorned with original artwork, including pieces by Emilio Isgró and Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s marine photographs. The MSC Foundation has acquired this collection to raise awareness about marine conservation.

Sustainability is at the heart of EXPLORA II, especially with renowned marine environmentalist Rosalba Giugni serving as the godmother. The ship features advanced environmental technologies, including selective catalytic reduction systems, shore power plug-in connectivity, and underwater noise management systems. These measures contribute to reducing emissions and protecting marine life. As a result, EXPLORA II has been awarded the “Green Plus” certification by RINA, the highest level for environmental sustainability.

Onboard EXPLORA II, guests will find a haven of tranquillity and indulgence. The Ocean Wellness Spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments inspired by authentic Ayurvedic principles. The Helios Pool & Bar has been refreshed with bespoke outdoor furniture designed by Matteo Nunziati, creating a serene and stylish atmosphere. What comes as a surprise is that the wet areas of the luxurious spa do not come at a daily rate but are included in the cabin fees.

The ship’s culinary offerings are as exquisite as its design. Guests can savour a variety of dining options, from casual to fine dining. The Ocean Lounge offers panoramic sea views and a relaxed atmosphere, while the Yacht Club serves gourmet cuisine and personalized service.

EXPLORA II offers a wide range of unique entertainment options for guests of all ages. The ship features a state-of-the-art theatre, where guests can enjoy live performances, shows, and movies. For those seeking relaxation, the ship offers a variety of lounges, bars, and outdoor spaces. With so much to do onboard and so many destinations to explore, the casino has a relatively smaller presence.

EXPLORA II introduces new features to enhance the guest experience, including a Buccellati jewellery boutique, exclusive collaborations with luxury brands.

Dedicated to providing exceptional service to its guests, the ship’s crew is highly trained and attentive, ensuring that every guest’s needs are met. The company’s commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of the onboard experience.

EXPLORA II has been developed to further enhance the guest experience and, as with her sister ship EXPLORA I, embodies a fusion of elegant Swiss precision and modern European craftsmanship. In collaboration with leading superyacht and hospitality designers, every aspect of the new ship was designed to evoke an ‘Ocean State of Mind’ to reflect the Explora Journeys’ approach to luxury.

This winter season, EXPLORA II will reposition to the Caribbean, offering itineraries to St. Barts, Aruba, and Antigua. In the summer of 2025, she will sail in the Western Mediterranean, visiting ports such as Barcelona, St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, and Porto Cervo.
