Sri Lankan sanctuary blends luxury with sustainability

Sun Siyam Pasikudah, a beachfront resort nestled in Sri Lanka’s Eastern region, has undergone a transformation that prioritises both luxury and environmental responsibility. Reopened in late 2023, the resort boasts elegant décor featuring locally sourced cane materials and lush greenery surrounding its 34 rooms.

This commitment to sustainability extends beyond aesthetics, say Chaminda Upul Kumara, Sustainability Project Manager at Sun Siyam Resorts, and Arshed Refai, General Manager of the Pasikudah property.

The resort actively incorporates eco-friendly practices throughout the guest experience. Lush landscaping utilizes natural vegetation, minimizing the need for artificial alternatives. Locally sourced, hand-crafted cane furniture supports the community while preserving traditional skills. These efforts resonate with today’s environmentally conscious travellers who appreciate responsible tourism practices.

As freshness is key at Sun Siyam Pasikudah, the resort cultivates its own fruits, vegetables, and herbs, ensuring a steady supply of fresh, local ingredients for its culinary creations. Guests savour the signature Ambarella welcome drink, made from organically grown fruit, for a refreshing start to their stay. This focus on local produce not only enhances the dining experience but also contributes to sustainable food practices.

Community engagement is another pillar of the resort’s philosophy with around 90 percent of the staff being recruited from surrounding towns, fostering a strong sense of community and loyalty. Training and development programmes empower staff to excel in their roles, creating a win-win situation for both employees and guests. The resort’s commitment to local talent extends beyond employment. They actively participate in beach cleanups, tree planting initiatives, and educational workshops on environmental conservation, contributing to the overall well-being of the region.

Energy efficiency is also a priority with Sun Siyam Pasikudah utilising solar and LED lighting, energy-saving appliances, and water conservation measures to minimise their environmental impact. The resort prioritises local sourcing for ingredients and supplies, further strengthening the local economy. Staff participation in community initiatives underscores their dedication to the region’s development.

Sri Lankan culture is woven into the very fabric of the guest experience. The resort’s design incorporates traditional architectural elements and natural materials. Guests can indulge in authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, participate in cooking classes, and witness captivating cultural performances. Locally sourced artwork and handicrafts adorn the resort, showcasing the talents of Sri Lankan artisans and offering guests the opportunity to support them through purchases at the resort’s boutique.

Sun Siyam Pasikudah goes beyond environmental and social responsibility. Their CarePhant project fosters the well-being of a young elephant named Kalo at the Elephant Transit Home in Sri Lanka. This initiative exemplifies the resort’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and responsible tourism. It aligns with the broader Sun Siyam Cares programme, which prioritises environmental impact reduction, community development, and local heritage preservation.

The resort actively promotes sustainable practices among guests -- in-room information and signage encourage participation in recycling and composting initiatives. Convenient recycling and composting bins in rooms and public areas make it easy for guests to contribute. Additionally, guests can choose to reuse towels and linens, further reducing water consumption.
