Virgin Atlantic’s Flight100 celebrates SAF

Virgin Atlantic has shared headline results from Flight100. The flight, which flew from London Heathrow to New York JFK on November 28, 2023, was the world’s first commercial aircraft operating across the Atlantic on 100 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), on a Boeing 787, using Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

Virgin Atlantic’s flight proved that the SAF used for the flight is safe to use with the existing infrastructure. It also delivers material reductions in CO2 and can also improve local air quality. The SAF also contributes to a reduction on persistent contrail formation and reduces fuel use.

The use of 100 per cent SAF saved the lifecycle equivalent of 95 tonnes of CO2 or 64 per cent of the emissions of a standard London Heathrow to New York JFK flight.
