Ramada Bahrain – Adliya – turns 40

When you first walk into the hotel, you get the feeling that you are walking back in time. From the iconic exterior to the marbled floors in the interiors, the place evokes an overall sense of timelessness and nostalgia.

Opened in 1977, Ramada Bahrain – Adliya has, over the years, become a memorable icon to all who have visited the hotel.

“Being one of the oldest hotels in the kingdom, Ramada Bahrain – Adliya has become a landmark for the local people as well as foreigners to the kingdom over the last 40 years,” said Matthias Hellweg, the hotel’s general manager.

Located in the plush business district of Adliya, facing the Gudaibiya Palace with the Grand Mosque nearby, the hotel is in close proximity to the World Trade Centre, Bahrain Financial Harbour, Manama district, shopping malls and Block 338 – a charming pedestrian quarter crammed with international restaurants, art galleries and small boutiques. The property is also just 8 kilometres from the Bahrain International Airport.

The prime hotel is a testimony to the growth of Bahrain’s tourism sector and economy, having stood the test of time through four decades.

Bearing witness to major changes in Bahrain’s tourism landscape, the hotel has seen the country gradually grow, with the development of the Juffair area – which was previously just sea. “Reclamation of land has taken development to a whole new level, further enabling the country to expand and support the growing number of tourism arrivals,” Hellweg said.

Hellweg is impressed with the growth of the kingdom, pointing out that the number of new hospitality projects coming up in Bahrain is a ‘sign of a booming industry’.

And though an increasing number of hotels may spell increased competition, Hellweg welcomes the challenge.

“Even as supply increases to meet the growing travellers’ numbers, Ramada Bahrain – Adliya continues to draw a regular clientele primarily because our hotel has focused on putting the customers first, providing them an international standard of hospitality at a fair pricing.”

“Despite the constant pressure of increasing competition, our steady database of loyal customers proves that we are doing something right,” Hellweg said proudly.

The 123-key hotel was given a complete makeover in 2015, revealing a new look from top to toe – while still maintaining its yesteryear charm – with enhanced facilities and dining options.

Offering the best in fine dining is Le Jardin, an all-day French bistro concept that has welcomed a number of top dignitaries over the years. Another favoured outlet is The Exchange, the hotel’s pub-restaurant that has gained popularity among its
European patrons.

“The message we want to convey to our guests is that although we may be a traditional hotel, we are definitely ‘modern’ in terms of our facilities and our approach towards our guests.”

As one of the international hotel pioneers in the kingdom, the 40-year old property continues to be a popular choice among travellers, especially corporate travellers, with repeat business from the Americas, India and Europe.

“While most of the hotels in the kingdom cater to the leisure market from across the region, our primary clientele is the corporate market, owing to our proximity to key business hubs like the World Trade Centre and Bahrain Financial Harbour, he added.

Hellweg expects business levels to be good this year, especially in September, when it launches its special 40 per cent discount on room rates and special services as part of its anniversary celebrations.

“Additionally, a two-day event will be held with the first day being an invite-only function and the second day being open to the public,” Hellweg noted.

A hospitality veteran, Hellweg is no stranger to the Middle East, having served in various positions across Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia prior to joining Ramada Bahrain – Adliya in 2014.

Hailing from Germany, Hellweg brings 26 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

Since arriving in the kingdom, Hellweg said he was delighted by the warm welcome he’d received from the people and immediately felt at home. He is honoured to be a part of Bahrain’s history and hopes to make a difference at the glorious hotel.
